Overview
(edit)
Civano is an ideal planned community in southeast Tucson for the eco-minded and it's planners have stated that "it is an antidote to urban sprawl's five banes: loss of community, loss of open space, traffic congestion, air pollution, and poor use of resources." The idea is that it is an environmentally conscious somewhat self-contained community that integrates solar energy and was built wit sustainable building methods and with conservation in mind.
There is plenty to do for residents with Civano's eco-working groups and activities like a book club, toddlers group and planned bike rides. More information can be found at www.civanoneighbors.com.

Civano is a fantastic idea- a eco community with a ton of activities and opportunities to appreciate Tucson's great outdoors. It was originally planned with younger individuals and families in mind, but two major mistakes were made. Preventing urban sprawl is a huge part of environmental preservation and developments outside the city limits are something that has gotten out of control in Tucson. So why build Civano so far away from central Tucson? It forces people to make very eco-unfriendly commutes and encourages further development in the area. This doesn't make sense, being there is so much vacant land in the city. Also, younger individuals and families generally prefer a shorter commute.
Urban sprawl and commute issues aside, Civano is a great concept and I hope we see more developments like this... only closer to town!
