Overview
(edit)
Barrio Viejo's name means "Old Neighborhood" and it's unique beauty and sense of history is what has made it what can be considered tucson's most well-known neighborhood. It has been the site of endless photo shoots and the subject of countless paintings, due to it's colorful adobe row houses, many of which date back to the 1800s. It's residents are a mix of artists, musicians, young families and Mexican American families that have lived there for generations. Many of the homes have been refurbished and list for pricey sums, but there is also affordable housing available, especially if you know the right people. Those lucky enough to grab the best-priced apartments are usually referrals from exiting tenants.
It's also the home of many landmarks, such as the El Tiradito shrine, the historic Cushing Street Bar & Grill, Elysian Grove Bed & Breakfast, El Minuto Restaurant and several beautiful murals. The Tucson Convention Center is across the street and downtown is just a few short blocks away, making it an extremely convenient location for those who love a commute free trip to work (you can bike if you work downtown!), entertainment and the arts.

Barrio Viejo is the perfect place to call him if you appreciate things colorful, rustic and artsy and your interests are centered in the downtown area. Ultra conservative types would probably feel at home elsewhere. Crime is generally limited to minor break ins and bike thefts, but in general it can be considered a pretty safe area. After all, the police station makes up the north border!
