Overton didn't hold on to his portion of the land for long. He sold his share to Francis. W. Pettygrove making Pettygrove and Lovejoy instant business partners. These gentlemen both wanted to name this territory after their hometowns and decided to toss a coin to end the dispute. After three tosses, Pettygrove proved to be the victor. Since Pettygrove came from Portland, Maine, it only seemed right to deem the name, Portland, Oregon. Portland was incorporated in 1851 and has been on the rise ever since!
