Nutley, NJ is a close suburb and a good choice for living outside of New York. It's very safe which is a huge contrast to Newark just 7 miles up the road. The town is attractive, especially Memorial Park. It is quite beautiful and serene. Homes hold their value here. There are not a lot of apartments to choose from as far as renting. But what is offered has reasonable prices especially compared to what you would pay in Manhattan. The citizens are fairly well educated, statistically speaking, with 32% holding college degrees and 10% with professional degrees. This district is largely Republican, so liberals may not want to come here. It's a close community with activities in terms of recreation and the arts. It's family oriented and conservative. If you like that atmosphere, this is a great choice.

This is an attractive looking town that's very close to NY with easy train access. You can buy a fairly large home in the $400,000-$800,000 range. That's not too bad for this area considering how much space you can get. It's a safe city with low crimes rates for violent and property categories. There is a commitment to the arts with the William Carlos Williams Center for Performing Arts. It has movie theaters and stages for ballet, concerts, and plays. It has a number of well maintained parks that the people use regularly. And if you're on the hunt for a sugar daddy or mama, Money Magazine listed Rutherford as a top place to find affluent singles. Apartment prices are obviously lower than Manhattan, but not that cheap either. In general, it's a great choice for a suburb.

Summit is a very attractive town. Of course, the incomes here are so high you could probably eat right off the sidewalk. There are architect designed home, many of which were built in the 1950's as suburbs grew in New Jersey. However, homes here are expensive. One reason is because of zoning laws that required single family homes to be constructed on large lots. This has kept out multi-family dwellings and other undesirable structures. This practice has not gone unnoticed. The city dealt with lawsuits pertaining to fair housing practices. They claim to be working on the issue. Schools are good here. In fact, Summit High School was ranked 149th in the Nation in Newsweek Magazine 2005 for best schools in the country. This is s fantastic looking town if you can come up with the cash. Liberals won't like the Republican leanings of the city's politics. And you don't come here looking for bohemians, eclectics, and the like. But in general, you could do much worse.

Woodbridge, NJ is an old city that's very safe and a good choice for the NY metro area. You have good earning potential with high incomes reported. However, we're in a recession and this area has unemployment barely above 10% like most of the country. Apartment rental prices are quite good here, especially compared to Manhattan. One drawback is the commute into NY if you have to go every day. Otherwise, an hour and 30 minutes trip once in a while isn't a bad deal considering how much money you can save. Money Magazine voted placed the city in the top 100 as best places to live in 2007. There are few nice looking buildings such as the Barron Arts Center and a few homes and churches on the historic registry. In general, this isn't a bad place to move. You've got a small town feel and decent schools. If you're looking for something more eclectic, this might not work for you.

Bloomfield is a nice size town for someone wanting access to the Big Apple without all the headaches, like expensive apartments. Renting an apartment will be significantly less, around $1000 a month on average. Most apartment buildings are older and clustered around the Garden State Parkway, for easy access to everything. So if you want something new, this might not be the place. Other pluses for Bloomfield include a fairly low crime rate, attractive buildings, and a low unemployment rate despite the recession. Residents tend to be middle class with 85% having high school diplomas, 31% with college degrees, and 10% with graduate degrees.

Englewood, NJ is an attractive town that's a great alternative to living right in Manhattan. It's less than 20 miles away and has a comfortable population where you can enjoy a small town atmosphere, while being close to one of the most exciting cities in the world. And with it being out of NY, whatever you find will have much more space than the typical shoeboxes in Big Apple. It's a relatively safe place with property crime rate number 5 on a scale of 1-10 and 10 being the highest. Violent crime is rated 4. Unemployment is about 8% right now. So the recession has hit this area, but it's not as bad as many parts of the country. Overall, it's a good choice if you can afford it.

North Bergen, NJ has breathtaking views of Manhattan that's just across the Hudson River. The location to the Big Apple is it's biggest selling point. Apartment seekers will find plenty of options here in North Bergen with prices that will begin with $1000 on up to $3000. Obviously, suburbs of New York will be pricey. But, considering what you pay in Manhattan, you have some wonderful spacious options with views of the river. You don't need a car here with the light rail, buses, and subways. Rents are generally cheaper than in NY and other boroughs, but on the flip side, you're in a dirty dangerous city. Limit your time in Newark to just using the airport and keep looking for something better.

Linden is just 13 miles from New York and could be a good choice for commuters. It's known as a working class town. It has low percentages of people with college and professional degrees. The rents are a little lower than many boroughs, so you could probably snag a deal. It's relatively safe and stable. But there's not much to do there in terms of cultural events, and doesn't seem to be terribly interesting. Unemployment hovers around 10% like most of the country. So it's not better but not worse than most places in the country. In general, you could spend less money here compared to other suburbs. However, it's not a lot less in terms of the price to pay for boredom and mundane. You can do better.
