Overview
(edit)
Longfellow is in South Minneapolis, and is mostly occupied by young, middle-class families in the many 1920's-era bungalows that line the city streets. Bordered by Hiawatha on the west, the neighborhood extends to 38th Avenue on the east and settles directly on top of Lake Street (between 27th and 34th Streets). Longfellow is increasingly diverse, and householders here live mostly in family groups, roughly half of which have children, and are slightly below the average income for a Minneapolis family. The neighborhood waves the liberal, "green" flag of Seward, its neighborhood to the north, although perhaps with a more working-class angle. The commercial and retail centers are along Lake Street, especially where it intersects Minnehaha and Hiawatha Avenues. Some of the city's best restaurants, such as Manny's Tortas, the Town Talk Diner and Midori's Floating World Café find their home at this bustling corner of the neighborhood. The new East Lake Community Library offers great programs for Minneapolis residents, and Patrick's Cabaret features some of the city's most innovative, experimental artists in its weekly cabaret presentation. Residents also benefit from access to the Light Rail system along Hiawatha, which provides easy access to downtown and southern Minneapolis.

Longfellow is charming, and very community-oriented. The homes are small but lovely, and if you're looking to buy, you may be able to find a beautiful home at a reasonable price here. There's easy access to downtown and south Minneapolis via Highway 55 and St. Paul is just a hop, skip and jump down Lake Street. Convenient, quiet, and homey.
