This beautiful, quaint, historic town of Lynchburg, VA is bordered by the epic Blue Ridge Mountains and the James River (50 square miles). Its historic roots date back to 1757 when it was founded by US patriot, John Lynch (who originated the term "lynching"). Lynchburg's 74,000 residents pride themselves with a rich history that includes Thomas Jefferson's summer retreat home, Poplar Forest, and the Courthouse of Appomattox, the surrendering Civil War location of General Robert E. Lee to his northern foe, General Ulysses S. Grant. Over the years, Lynchburg has developed itself into a thriving business center that has been nationally acknowledged as 5th best city in VA (VA was ranked as #1 state in America for business environment). Lynchburg is located about 100 miles NE of Greensboro, NC. Lynchburg also boasts of its top rated school system that is a perennial leader in VA schools. Along with an affordable real estate market for single family homes and apartments, Lynchburg has a wonderful selection of outdoor activities including 12 parks, endless mountain trails, Wintergreen Ski Center and Smith Lake, one of the country's largest man made lakes.
