Overview
(edit)
New Center is a section of Detroit that's about 3 miles north of downtown. It's a commercial area where General Motors had its headquarters from 1923 to 1996. Their offices are now downtown. Most of it was developed in the 1920's. The name comes from a newspaper that began in 1933 that focused solely on automobiles. The paper still exists but it's now called the Detroit Auto Scene. The area is centered just west of the intersection of Woodward Avenue and Grand Boulevard, and is bounded by Virginia Park Historic District on the north. On the South, Ford Freeway is a boundary along with John R. on the east.

New Center has historic sites like the Fischer and Cadillac Place. It's residential center is at the north end. There are some great buildings in the New Amsterdam district that's within New Center, that could be of significant value if the city can get through this recession. The Virginia Park Historic area is also included in New Center. The homes here are spectacular. Tudors, Neo-Georgian, and Bungalows are the predominant styles. They were built between 1890-1915. Virginia Park Street Scape is nice in particular. In general, this area has signs of life and progress missing in other parts of the city. If you have the money to invest and you're not particularly concerned with the school system, this could be a good place. The Detroit public school system has many troubles so moving here with kids is not the best idea. However, if this town with such history and great architecture can get through this era, New Center in particular will do well with all that it offers, economic strength, and proximity to universities.
