College Park, MD is a small town 10 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., in Prince George's County. Approximately 24,000 people reside there with a median house household income of $62,000. The mean price for all housing in 2007 was about $387,000. The town was named for the Maryland Agriculture College that was established in 1807. Later the school became the University of Maryland that has roughly 38,000 students. It's the largest University in the state. It has one of the oldest airports in the country, dating back to 1907 and numerous other museums.

College Park is small town that's ideal for a commute if you're working in Washington D.C. It's easy to get around and has that young feel as home to the University of Maryland. The school actually has more people than the community. The city has improved the downtown area in the last couple of years, with initiatives beginningin 2002 for more mixed use developments. However, it still ranks low on the charm scale and not likely to move up quickly. Neighborhoods such as Takoma Park have lovely prewar cottages and the campus is attractive. But rental prices are expensive. You'll pay between $800-1500 for a one bedroom. In addition, University Maryland students have a reputation for bad behavior after sporting events, sometimes even rioting. It's a stone's throw from D.C. and has a low unemployement rate despite the recession. However, you could probably find a place with better shopping, restaurants, and safer nightlife.
College Park is a great town that gives you wonderful access to DC, Metro and other major highways. Rent is cheaper then other areas but you still get some of the great perks of living closer into the city.

During events (football games, graduation), difficult to get around
Most of the people living in College Park are either students attending the University of Maryland or are recent graduates thereof. The average age in College Park is around 22. It is not a very affluent community (not many college students are very affluent), with the average income around $35,000/year. The city is predominantly white (about 70%), with African-Americans (15%) and Asians (5%) comprising most of the rest. The other 10% is a mix.
Aside from the students, there are a large number of married couples, many with children. The average couple has one child. The young and the elderly comprise less than 20% of the population.
People are generally nice, easy-going and open-minded, likely a result of the nearby campus.
