RentWiki Launches First Socially Integrated Apartment Rental Site

By Robert Turnbull

rwlogo_srs226x63px

RentWiki.com announced today the launch of the first online rental site that lets apartment hunters vet not only the property but the neighboring community as well. By integrating social media and networking features with property listings, RentWiki.com allows existing renters to contribute content about their neighborhoods, 5a8 as well as interact with potential neighbors before they commit.
“It’s hard to get a feel for the day-to-day life and character of a neighborhood from such standard sources as chambers of commerce, property listings, random blogs or basic apartment listing sites,” said Jamie Gallo, CEO, RentWiki.com. “RentWiki.com gives an insider’s look at potential areas of residence and a platform to network with the people living there, making it faster and easier than ever to find the right place to live.”

RentWiki.com was designed after six years of research to deliver what people have been looking for but unable to find through existing online rental services. The site offers an unprecedented, interactive look at daily life at the neighborhood level in a wiki format via locally contributed content, content widgets, and other social networking tools. In addition to wiki content, RentWiki.com includes neighborhood reviews, pros and cons, and renter recommendations. Unlike other Internet sites that focus solely on apartment features, RentWiki.com helps people find a home and neighborhood that fit their personal style, taste and financial needs by seeing what people who actually live there have to say about the area’s:

  • Neighbors – what do the local residents think of the area?
  • Social scene – bars, clubs, restaurants
  • Value – how do prices measure up to quality of life?
  • Transportation/parking
  • Unique rental process ‘ins and outs’
  • Pet friendliness/unfriendliness
  • Entertainment/recreation
  • Recommended streets/areas
  • Essentials – groceries, gyms, banks, etc.
  • Family information – schools, community centers and houses of worship
  • And more categories as users create new and relevant topics

RentWiki.com content is screened by the company and its site users. Malicious or inappropriate content is removed. In addition, all renter leads sent to an apartment community are reviewed and validated as legitimate leads.

Older workers drive social networking in the office – Computerworld

Step aside you whippersnappers! Gen X-ers, Baby Boomers are on top of this

By Sharon Gaudin
October 21, 2010 03:50 PM ET

Computerworld - Think those young workers, fresh out of college, all shiny and idealistic are driving the use of social networking at your company?

Well, think again.

The youngest workers in the office aren’t the driving force behind social networking in the enterprise. It’s Generation X – people between 29 and 49 – who are taking to these new tools, according to a Forrester Consulting study.

And it’s not just Gen-Xers showing up the Generation Y-ers, who range from 15 to 28 years old, in the office. The report, which was sponsored by Citrix Systems, noted that after Gen X workers, Baby Boomers over 55 were the most likely to use social tools in the workplace.

Restaurants Grab Most Location-Based Check-ins

MyTown App Users Use Restaurants to Rack Points on Game

by Kunur Patel
Published: August 17, 2010

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Fast feeders, early data shows you’re indeed cool enough for check-ins.

–> Quick-service chains Subway, McDonald’s, Starbucks and Burger King have the most unique check-ins on MyTown, a location-based game with more than 3 million users that provided the data. Subway has seen nearly 6.4 million check-ins from more than 500,000 users since the app launched in December.

Restaurant chains make up eight of the top 10 most unique check-ins locations, along with pharmacies CVS and Walgreens. Restaurants saw the most check-ins by category in July, with 14.2 million. Businesses came in second with 8.5 million, mostly because people like to check-in at work, said Keith Lee, co-founder and CEO of MyTown developer Booyah.

For a category that’s become somewhat synonymous with Foursquare, a location-based mobile app that saw 20- and 30-somethings checking in to bars and restaurants in cities in its early days, MyTown’s results may seem surprising. But that’s the difference between checking in to share your location on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook and checking in to win a game, Mr. Lee said.

Foursquare is often used to build a “social profile,” said Allison Mooney, VP-emerging trends at MobileBehavior. While both Foursquare and MyTown offer points for checking in, MyTown users check in to get virtual goods or rewards to advance through a Monopoly-like game.

Top 10 locations on MyTown by unique check-ins since the app launched in December 2009
Location Total Check-ins Total Unique Check-ins
Subway 6,369,560 512,695
McDonald’s 4,985,559 452,395
Starbucks 4,404,052 381,821
Burger King 2,507,445 287,898
CVS/pharmacy 6,204,216 285,380
Taco Bell 2,316,292 275,689
Pizza Hut 2,261,548 262,714
Walgreens 2,466,851 258,053
Domino’s Pizza 2,181,409 244,263
Wendy’s 1,502,047 217,553
Source: MyTown

“People are very selective of where they post on other location-based apps,” said Mr. Lee. “Most people don’t want to tell Facebook their day-to-day errands or places they go.” he said, adding that people are much more willing to check in at everyday places like Best Buy or McDonald’s on MyTown because they want to accrue rewards to advance in the game. Only 15% of MyTown check-ins are shared on Facebook, he said.

“We build our social profiles through editing and leaving things out as well as sharing,” Ms. Mooney said. “I don’t think everyone is embarrassed to check in at fast-food places, but for some people and social groups, there may be a stigma.”

That’s not to say quick-service check-ins aren’t happening at all on Foursquare, or that the app is motivating users with points. Noah Glass, CEO of GoMobo, a food-ordering mobile-technology company, said he used to check in to places such as Five Guys, Subway and Starbucks when he used Foursquare, to earn points and get on that app’s leader board.

“I think people are checking in to fast-food places either because they think they are cool or are trying to score points,” he said. “Or, more and more these days, people get benefits or direct incentives for checking in.”

Booyah’s Mr. Lee said chains are topping the check-in charts by virtue of having more locations across the country. Out of MyTown’s more than 300 million check-ins, he estimates 60% occur at big-brand locations vs. 40% in sole proprietors and mom-and-pop businesses.

Foursquare, which has 2.7 million users worldwide, with 60% in the U.S., reports that the most popular venues are transit-related locations such as airports and train stations, and also parks and museums. It declined to provide more specific data.

Even with its numerous quick-service check-ins, MyTown has not worked with any restaurant brands, while Foursquare has inked deals with restaurants such as Chili’s Grill & Bar, Papa John’s, Starbucks and Pizza Hut.

Instead, MyTown has launched programs for retailer H&M; Disney, to promote the movie “Sorcerer’s Apprentice”; and package-goods brand Pantene. Pharmacies also made a good showing in MyTown’s top check-in list.

By volume including duplicate check-ins by the same user, CVS has the second-most check-ins at 6.2 million. Rite Aid and Walgreens also made that top ten.

Check-In On Foursquare Without Taking Your Phone Out Of Your Pocket

Heavy Foursquare users, you have a new app to get immediately. Future Checkin is an app that allows you to check-in to your favorite Foursquare venues automatically when you’re near them. You don’t have to do a thing besides simply have your phone on you and this app will check you in while running in the background with iOS 4.

Developer Tim Sears says he was actually inspired to make this app by our posts about iOS 4 background location and check-in fatigue. Check-in fatigue in particular is a growing problem. A number of heavy users of Foursquare that I know (myself included) have been complaining in recent months that it’s getting a bit tedious to have to pull out your phone each time to check-in to a venue. Particularly venues that you frequent. Future Checkin absolutely solves that.

Here’s how it works: you sign in to the app with your Foursquare account, and it shows you a list of Foursquare venues nearby. Or you can search for your favorite venues. From this list, you choose the ones to mark as “Favorites.” You can also scan your recent check-in history and select venues from here to add to your Favorites. This Favorites list is key — these are the venues you will be automatically checked-in to when you get close enough to them (within 300 meters).

There is also an option to automatically check-in to venues you’ve been to recently (ones not explicitly marked as Favorites). In the “More” area of the app you can toggle this on and off. From here, you can also turn auto Favorites check-ins on and off. You can also turn off notifications (that send you a Push Notification when you’re automatically checked-in to a venue), and toggle the “Kill Switch” which basically turns off background location.

All of this works thanks to the new ability for third-party apps to run in the background with iOS 4. Location is one of the features that can remain on when you leave an app (a slider in the settings allows you to determine if you’d like the GPS updates to be more frequent or save some battery life by making them less frequent).

This app is really designed for people who are getting check-in fatigue, who often forget to check-in to places, or who don’t want to be rude by pulling out their phone in social settings. Who it is not designed for is people trying to cheat Foursquare, so Future Checkin will only check you in to a place once every four hours, and never the same place twice in a row,” Sears says.

As for the future of Future Checkin, Sears says that he plans to implement Gowallaintegration too, as soon as their write API is ready to roll (hopefully this week). That could help solve the larger issue of check-in fatigue — checking-in across all these apps at various venues. Future Checkin’s solution would basically be check.in that runs in the background. Awesome.

With the launch of iOS 4, Loopt

was the first app with the ability to run location in the background. But that doesn’t auto check you in to venues, instead it just continually shows where you are to your friends on a map. In that regard, it’s more like Google Latitude. That may actually be a better solution for many users now, as it’s not yet clear if the world is ready for these auto check-ins. But power users of Foursquare certainly are. And this app speaks to how this stuff might work in the future.

The only question may be: will Foursquare itself implement such an option soon?

Future Checkin is $0.99 — a special 50% off price for launch week. Find it in the App Store here.

Long overdue.

Foursquare Badges-Update

Foursquare Badges

For a long time, Wikipedia was the main source for information on foursquare badges. Unfortunately, Wikipedia has (for one reason or another) decided to delete their page. Bad news for foursquare users! However, thekruser has answered your cries for help!

Due to popular demand, I have decided to create my own foursquare Badge List. This list will continue to grow. Each update or change will be announced in a blog post. To ensure you are updated, follow me on twitter, or subscribe to my RSS feed. If you have an addition or correction, please either add a comment or use the “Contact Me” link above.

Thanks to all who have helped in the past and who will help in the future. It is for people like you that I am maintaining this page.

This listing is split up into three categories: General Badges (can be obtained anywhere), City Specific Badges (only obtainable if you are in the specified city), and Event Badges (badges created for specific events). Keep in mind, some events move from city to city depending on the date. Currently, I have no information on whether a badge created for an event hosted in one city will be obtainable when the event changes venue. Also, some event badges are city specific — meaning the event is only held in one city. I am keeping those badges in the Event Badges.

Happy foursquaring (and, yes — I am relatively certain that is not a word)!

Bing World Cup foursquare Badge Bing World Cup This badge irritates me. This is the first step in the “over commercialization” of foursquare; and in this blogger’s opinion, foursquare will fail if they continue to add this type of badge. Here is why: the badge itself is no different than any other badge. It is unlocked by checking in to a location. “What location?” you may ask. The answer: use Bing Maps. That’s right! To find the locations that unlock the badge, you either have to get lucky or use Bing Maps. Why does this irritate me so? My answer: where does it end? Next we are going to have to install additional vendor/company apps on our phones just to get a badge. I am fine with having to “follow” a entity to get a badge because it really doesn’t effect much, but when I am forced to add information-mining apps on my phone, opening myself to location-based advertising, I will stop playing the game. How many different apps am I going to have to install or use to get a foursquare badge in the future? Just my opinion.

About Us

“Where should I live?” is a question 40 million movers ask each year.

When we move, we want to know much more than bed, bath, and price. We want to know about the location, safety, walkability, social scene, etc. and get a feel for the neighborhood. Instead of starting dozens of rental sites to sort through hundreds of listings, we call a friend, family member, or co-worker and ask for advice and their opinion to help narrow down the location.

We’ve previously launched sites such as ApartmentGuide.com, RealEstate.com and Rentals.com, and are guest speakers about social media at industry events. (Next gig - http://tr.im/speaking)
